Words to the Star Trek theme
by Vinny Badabing
Sometimes people ask me to sing a TV theme song. I’ll be working a gig and some nut wants to hear the theme from the Love Boat or Laverne and Shirley. Now mind you, these people are some of the best drinkers on the planet. And, since I’ll play anything as long as I get paid, I don’t mind handling the request. The fact of the matter is that I know the words to every TV theme song.

At least I thought I did.

Apparently, I missed one. The theme to the original Star Trek has words that go along with the music.

The music was written by Alexander Courage. The never used lyrics are by Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry. Now, the words don’t quite fit too good. It might be the reason why they weren’t used. I dunno. Anyways, here it is..

Beyond
The rim of the starlight
My love
Is wand’ring in star flight
I know he’ll find in star clustered reaches
Love, strange love a star woman teaches
I know
His journey ends never
His star trek
Will go on forever
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember
Remember me!
Swing it!

Karaoke aboard the Enterprise

I think the lesson here is two-fold; the first is that there are lyrics to everything. The second is that Gene Roddenberry, for all his genius, wasn't no Hoagy Carmichael.

Lesson learned, I suppose.

Live long, eat lasagna, and prosper.
